The VSBA Meeting scheduled for March 23 and 24 was initially at Meadow Park, owned by the Va State Fair. With their bankruptcy, the VSBA was left without a location! Fortunately, some kind folks in Richmond, Va (ACCA Shrine Center, near Bryan Park) offered up their location. You can find more information here. In addition, be sure to check out the Program – some of the times have changed, due to the new location. Hope to see you there!

The East Richmond Beekeepers Association has started a new Sustainable Beekeeping program. We believe in the power of local Nucs and local Queens. Unfortunately, there is more demand for local Nucs then there is supply. In an effort to remedy this situation, the Sustainable Beekeeping Committee has built a large number of wooden Nuc bodies and is going out to ERBA members and assisting them with creating Nucs from their hives (assuming that they did not use chemicals on their hives last year.) An experienced beekeeper will arrive at the ERBA member’s bee yard and either assist the ERBA member in creating a Nuc or create one while they watch. The Sustainable Beekeeping committee member will return to the member beekeeper’s yard and inspect the nuc for a queen in four weeks. Two to three weeks later he (or she) will return to make sure a quality Nuc exists. If so, the queen will be marked and the Nuc will be sold to one of the many folks that have requested Nucs from us this year. The ERBA member will receive around 75% of the sale price of the Nuc ($100 to $125) and the remaining funds will go to [...]

Our January meeting was great! We spent a few moments confirming our new executive committee (see below) and then spent a good hour doing general Q&A about beekeeping, top bar hives, and the old package vs nuc debate. Good time was had by all and 2012 looks to be starting off on a great foot. The Beekeeping Class filled up quickly, which we are excited about. It’s great to see so many folks either getting into the hobby or interested in getting a refresher course on beekeeping. Our February Meeting will focus on Making Splits and Raising Queens in 10 Minutes, by our new Vice President, Wilhelm Golub. As always, visitors are welcome!
CLASS IS FULL! Unfortunately, we cannot accept any further registrations for the 2012 Beekeeping 101 class. The East Richmond Beekeepers Association will be holding a beginning Beekeeping class in February that focuses on Sustainable Beekeeping! It will be a two day course, held on Sat, February 11 (from 1 pm to 5 pm) and Sat, February 18 (from 2 pm to 6 pm). The cost, $25, will include a book, hand-outs, membership in a local beekeeping club and a future workshop in a bee yard. The course will be held in Eastern Henrico (Varina) and will focus on what a new beekeeper needs to know and do for the first few months of beekeeping. Several of our mentors have mentioned that many new beekeeping classes focus on such a wide range of subjects that new beekeepers are ill prepared for the first few months of their beekeeping adventures. It is true that there is much to know regarding the tasks for the four seasons of the year, things to be prepared for in your second year and many other management techniques. But, a new beekeeper really needs (and wants) to know what to do in the first few weeks and [...]

October Program We have Mark Bennett of Dadant Va scheduled to present at our October meeting !! Mark will bring and demonstrate items in 3 categories. Anything new in the last couple of years – products, services, policies, etc. Options for the basics – for example, bottom boards – solid, screened, with built-in small hive beetle trap. Queen excluders – plastic, wood bound metal, metal bound metal. Veils – different styles. Etc. Accessories – for example, pollen traps, feeders, nuke boxes, small hive beetle traps.
The annual Ask the Experts meeting was a huge success. Three experienced beekeepers fielded questions that ranged from feeding bees, overwintering Nuc’s, packages vs nucs, and mite treatments (or non-treatment.) The other important items discussed included: 1. The State Fair Richmond-area Beekeeper group is still looking for beekeepers interested in selling honey, candles and other bee products at the Fair. Please contact Eva S. Tashjian-Brown by September 15 with estimates of what you can provide. 2. The Virginia State Beekeepers Association has announced the first round of testing for the Certified Level of the Master Beekeeper Program. As of this writing, 15 spaces remained. 3. Registration forms and the initial program for the Fall Virginia State Beekeepers Meeting in Weyers Cave, Va have been announced on the VSBA Site. Send in your registration forms now to get the early bird discount. Finally, the November meeting will not be held at our normal location due to work being done at Fort Lee Baptist Church. We will announce the temporary location for November in our October meeting.

As you have heard by now, a consortium of bee clubs in the Richmond area are together planning the Honey Booth at the 2011 Va State Fair where all members of all Virginia Beekeeper Groups are being encouraged to participate. The consortium is chaired by Eva Tashjian-Brown, president of the Richmond Beekepers Association. The 2011 Virginia State Fair runs from Thursday night, September 29th through Sunday, October 9th and we are looking for Virginia Beekeepers to work the booth at the fair which will involve educating fairgoers with provided materials on beekeeping practices in addition to product sales. There are 2 SHIFTS available to VOLUNTEER at the fair booth each day: 10 AM – 4 PM and 4 PM – 9 PM(10 PM on Fridays and Saturdays). We need 2 people per shift on weekdays and 4 per shift on Saturdays and Sundays. That’s over 50 shifts so we are calling on you to spread the word to members of your group that we need help from as many folks from as many Virginia clubs as possible to volunteer. A portion of proceeds are even donated to clubs whose members volunteer and working the fair is A LOT OF FUN! [...]
